Retired US Army General Lloyd Austin, Biden’s candidate for the Defense Department, said that Iran poses a threat to America’s partners in the region and to US forces there, and Austin made clear that Iran's behavior creates instability, and affirmed that he would work to cleanse the ranks of the army of “racists and extremists” and would seek to strengthen state alliances The United States will focus its strategy on China, if the Senate confirms the nomination of the elected Joe Biden as defense minister.

"If the council confirms my candidacy, I will work hard to eliminate sexual abuse, rid our ranks of racists and extremists, and create an environment in which all who are qualified and willing will find the opportunity to serve this country with honor," Austin said during the nomination debate session. Austin expressed his aspiration to "reform alliances."

Austin would become the first black American to serve as Secretary of Defense, and he announced his intention to promote diversity within the military, in which largely whites hold command positions.
