CNN: Biden is required to decide the fate of his forces in Afghanistan before April

CNN, citing sources in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said that US President Joe Biden is required to announce his decision on the fate of US forces in Afghanistan before April 1, with the approaching deadline for withdrawing American soldiers from the country.

The new US administration decided, a few weeks after Biden’s inauguration as president on January 20, to freeze the plan to withdraw American soldiers from Afghanistan for review.

Under the agreement, which was concluded by the administration of former President Donald Trump, with the "Taliban" movement in February 2020, all remaining American soldiers in Afghanistan must be withdrawn by next May.

According to the US network CNN, military officials within the NATO forces in Afghanistan, led by the United States, have confirmed that although the deadline for withdrawal is May 1, Biden must announce his decision before April 1, given that Because the process may require several weeks.

The sources pointed out that if Biden decided to withdraw the remaining 2,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, this would require great efforts, especially with regard to dealing with weapons, equipment and installations of the US forces in Afghanistan.

The same sources pointed out that the US military will need, whether to transfer or destroy its weapons and military equipment, so that it does not fall into the hands of the Taliban, while coordination with the Afghan government will take some time in order to hand over US military sites and installations in the country. They explained that these arrangements need at least 30 days, adding that everything depends on President Biden's decision. "But at the present time, there are no indications of the nature of the upcoming decision," as they put it.
